I can remember him becoming headmaster of the school for a while (in Uncanny X-Men & New Mutants) but not sure if he was a fully fledged X-Man.

Anyone else?

Yeah, from what I can gather he was made Headmaster of the school for a while and led the New Mutants but soon left to take over the Hellfire Club. I don't know any more than that.

I remember him becoming and X-Man in AOA or rather in the Onslaught story arc.

He didn't actually become an X-Man, he just teamed up with them temporarily didn't he?

As far as I can remember, he became an X-Man because Xavier tampered his mind, that's why Onslaught was born... And also as far as I can remember, he became the head of X-Men in AOA.

Anyway, does House of M count?

He's head of the X-Men.

I think he was the head of the Genosha and the X-Men ceased to exist in that reality because mutants ruled that world and there is no need of them.

Dunno, if this will help, (i guess it might need to be refined a bit more)

Excerpted from: http://www.marveldirectory.com/individu ... agneto.htm
Quote:
....Eventually, however, MacTaggert's manipulation of his mind had a delayed effect. Magneto underwent a crisis of conscience, gave up his plans of world conquest, and became the X-Men's ally. When he found himself dying, Xavier asked Magneto to take over his School for Gifted Youngsters. Xavier was then taken into outer space to be healed by Shi'ar science, and Magneto became the mentor of Xavier's latest group of students, the New Mutants.

In time, though, Magneto's former personality slowly began to return. He abandoned the New Mutants and allied himself with the X-Men's foes in the Hellfire Club. He and the X-Man Rogue for a time developed a close relationship in the Savage Land. Ultimately, Magneto renewed his war with the human race and the X-Men, and gathered about him a new team of mutant underlings, the Acolytes, who virtually worshipped him.

Uhmm..what's AOA??

Anyways, as far as becoming "allied" with the X-Men,,,here's another Wiki excerpt:

Quote:
Magneto finds himself allied with Professor Xavier and the X-Men when a group of heroes and villains are abducted by the Beyonder, a nearly omnipotent yet frustratingly short-sighted being. This entity takes them to an alien world to participate in the 1984 series Secret Wars. The characters are sorted according to their desires, and so Magneto was placed with the heroes as his desires were based on a wish to help mutants rather than the more selfish drives of the others. This surprises many of the other heroes, who still believe he is a villain, although they mostly come to accept him as an ally.

Read the (1984) Secret Wars and there were no X-Men there because the only mutants present there were (as far as I can remember) cyclops, wolvie and storm.
Yes he lead the new mutants and that was part of the X-team. So he became part of the X-men for a while, and its part of the continuity unlike the AoA story.

In Uncanny X-Men #200 (seen here)

http://www.comicvine.com/the-uncanny-x-men-the-trial-of-magneto/37-26210/

This is what stiff mentioned earlier, Xavier is dying so Magneto takes over for him. I'm pretty sure this is where it starts, and it's at least near that time because his costume on the cover is the one he wore as part of the X-Men. I own this one and I remember reading it.
