I am not familiar with European comics in general. I was not aware of Cinebook Ltd. as a publisher but have been expanding my reading beyond the major two.

DC dabbled with translations of European comics with the Humanoids imprint and Marvel are giving it a go now with the Soleil books.

Still think the best way for people used to the traditional US comics to get into European style comics is Heavy Metal.

If Heavy Metal is typical of European style, I'll pass on European style because I never cared for the artistic style of Heavy Metal.

hevy metal is not typical of European style. Europe has a very diverse roster of styles. we have a different approach to putting comics out. there is bigger share of comics that come out in hc than in monthly form. you almost always get the whole story in one book.

try gaston, tin tin, jeremiah, nathan never, dylan dog (thou the dark horse reprint is so censured that it's not worth picking up), martin mystery, lucky luke, asterix, alan ford, spirou.

i was reading all of those and i can say that you will not be disappointed if you are looking for some change of paste.

By "style" I wasn't meaning how the comics are released (although HM now does contain graphic novel length stories in their entirety as well as serialised ones) I was meaning the art & writing styles. HM has pretty much always contained English language reprints of European work alongside US material.

in my opinion HM is still very much at home in the american school of comics. but i guess it depends on the region of europe as to what style you get. i live near italy so i'm more familiar with the french, spanish, italian and so on (as you can se from my suggestions).
on the other hand i have not read HM for at least 10 years. i just flip the pages to se if something catches my eye and always leave it.

First point to make, when talking about french comics, the exact is BD for Bande Dessinée (literally translated as 'Drawn strip').

Second, there is a huge variety of Comics in Europe and especially in Belgium and France. From the classic of Titin and Asterix who have been widely translated into dozens of language, through the wacky High Fantasty world of Lanfeust de Troy to the more down to earth European Style James Bond of XIII.

Third, the format is very different. Most of the comics there are in hard cover and tend to be pretty expansive compared to the american comics in soft cover. Also, European comics are mostly sold in specialized shops and big distribution centers.

Last, they take their inspiration from everywhere, there are american based french comics to 'la nouvelle manga' comics (which are basically manga edited by french authors like Katacomb).

Well , just my 2 cents.

Cheers.

I´m really into euro comics. Can´t get enaught.
That´s the comics I´ve been reading all my life ( nearly 50 y), never really liked the american form, don´t know why. Apart from a few ones.
I read english, and some norwegian languages but sadly not French or Belgian, there is some good comics coming therefrom.
Resently I found Avaxhome and have been shifting through it, found some good ones and am reading it these days.
Are there any more sites with euro comics apart from Avaxhome?

French BD are great for humor, but i prefer manga and comic who have more SF story.

Their some exception like "Les Humanoïdes Associés" but i don't know if it was translated in english.
