...Jump to Marvel first? (Sorry to be a tease with the title, but it wouldn't fit!) I did the same, (while I've only ever read one comic in my lifetime, I buy the video games and am a sucker for the movies, unless it's Spiderman 3 :?) I did the same and it baffled me. I guess I just grew up with it (I'm 14, and in my child years they showed re-runs of the '90s animated Spiderman series on telly, which I got hooked on.) I also used to play the original 2 Spiderman games on the PSX like crazy.

Wannabe Fandom aside, I do remember that there was a stunning lack of DC inspired, well, anything in my child days. I'd heard of Batman, but only the character. As such, I did somewhat glance over the 'Batman and Robin' video game for the PSX. I'd never even heard of DC at the time. Arkham Asylum/City were really the sparks that interested me in DC, and I joined here because apparently you can read comics, and I need to do some serious catch-up. DC actually needs more promotion, I recall there being a 'Teen Titans' and a 'Justice League' programme on telly, but these were rarely advertised and as such, never caught my eye.

I realise that I'm not even a true DC fan having never read one of their comics, but I'd love to delve into the universe some more, just a lack of resources to do so. I don't know how actively the U.S syndicate their comics over here to the United Kingdom, either. It can't be that Marvel is, better, can it? (An open question, not an opinion)

What do you think?

Marvel, for the majority, has better, more diverse characters. Also, aside from Batman's rogue gallery, DC lacks really good villians..ie..Doctor Doom, Magneto, Green Goblin, etc. I say that and Batman is my fav character.

The new 52 will help but DC still has weaker characters

Nowadays it's just probably down the the coverage outside comics. Marvel have the big studio movies and new video games every few months. Their characters are just more recognisable at the moment.

Really? I'm pretty sure there's a LOT of people out there that would disagree with you on that one.

for me I remember being a kid, it was the X-men cartoon, but at the same time i was always a fan of green lantern and then I picked up a Mark Waid issue of Captain America, and started getting into other heroes because of the appearances in captain america or x-men. Green Lantern the era I was reading ddin't have too much of that so maybe my interest wasn't as peaked for DC as it was for Marvel. Though I always liked batman because of the movies and thought the superman movies were neat, they never made me want to get into their comics.

I seem to be a bit older than most of you guys.... When I was a wee lad it was all about DC. Superman and Batman and Robin. My parents and Grandparents considered the covers (the only thing they saw) of Marvel comics too "older reader" for me. I was allowed an occasional Spider-man. What's funny is I was allowed to read Mad Magazine. As I got older I drifted towards Marvel, mostly because my friends were all reading Marvel. Back in the 70's the way DC wrote you could read an issue here, and issue there and not be totally lost. Which was good when you had to save up the 35 cents to buy the book. When I got to Marvel I had to catch up on back stories, and read a whole lot of other titles to keep up with the story I was following. The characters were more intense and they dealt with stories that were involved and not always whet Super Hero's were suppose to be involved in. My mother called them "The Soap Operas for little nerds." Now I mainly read Marvel because they are the characters I remember from the past... however I am about to jump head first into the New 52 just because I am totally curious.

Hey, what about Moon Knight! Oh, right... Or The Sentry! ... Dang... Deadpool's a...! ... I'll wait in the car...

I grew up watching the 90's Marvel cartoons (Spidey, X-Men, Hulk, Iron Man (oh what a terrible mash-up show that was...), FF...) and having no interest in watching Superman or Batman. They lived in made-up places, not New York. They were more fake, to me.

Cut to now, I never ended up watching Justice League, Teen Titans or Batman Beyond. I could watch every one of these shows online right now, too. But I haven't. I've seen most of the direct-to-DVD animated DC movies, but can't find the drive to watch the shows no matter how many ultra-positive reviews I've read or DC comics I've read. I did, however, watch any new Marvel cartoon that they put out.

Back on topic - I got so immersed in Marvel because the X-Men cartoon had just started, the Mega Drive game came out, the action figures were everywhere... I only saw a few of the comics because my friend's older brother had a ton - though I was barely allowed to touch because they were bagged and boarded... But Marvel really pushed X-Men at the time.

I can see why Marvel are still (or once again) the main comicbook company in the public eye. They have Disney-money behind them. So although DC have had Green Lantern out recently and keep teasing Dark Knight, Marvel had two superhero films out and haven't stopped pimping Avengers and showing previews of Avengers and Spider-Man. Seven Marvel heroes have been mentioned in mainstream media this past year (six Avengers, one Spidey), whereas four DC characters have had the same exposure. And one of those was because the Wonder Woman series got cancelled because of the pilot episode. Although that's not counting mentions of comicbooks.

tl;dr - I think what it boils down to is that people find relatable characters easier to follow. Can you relate to an alien who is invulnerable and can fly? How about a millionaire playboy who works out of a cave to fight crime at night? A space cop? Amazonian warrior princess? Hispanic kid with alien space-armour?

How about a guy who was a nerd and bullied as a kid and rights wrongs when he sees them? A patriot who fights communism and Nazi's? A Norse god - wait, I think I lost my train of thought...
