Nintendo announced a price cut of the 3DS from $249.99 to $169.99 in the U.S. effective August 12, 2011.

Japan will see a price cut from 25,000 yen to 15,000 yen on August 11. Australians will see a cut from AU$349.95 down to AU$250 on August 12. Pricing for Europe has not been announced.

"For anyone who was on the fence about buying a Nintendo 3DS, this is a huge motivation to buy now," said Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. "We are giving shoppers every incentive to pick up a Nintendo 3DS, from an amazing new price to a rapid-fire succession of great games."

If you purchased a 3DS anytime before the price cut date, you will receive 10 free Virtual Console NES and 10 free Gameboy Advance games. Users must connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before the price cut date. They will then be automatically registered in the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program.

The list of NES games include:

Super Mario Bros.
Donkey Kong Jr.
Balloon Fight
Ice Climber
The Legend of Zelda
+5 more

These titles are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. "Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost."

The list of GBA games include:

Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3
Mario Kart: Super Circuit
Metroid Fusion
WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$
Mario vs. Donkey Kong
+5 more

Nintendo says the GBA games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and that it "currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future."

since the button isn't working, thanks for posting this. I've had my 3ds since it came out and this is the best news I've heard since they announced Mega Man Legends 3, which has since been put on hold indefinitely. :D

I think price was only one of the reasons that nobody got one. The main reason for me is the obvious future upgrade "3DS Lite".

I considered buying one until i found out the 3d makes me have a headache and feel sick in about 30s-1m of using it.

Be fore release a guy had one outside of game and i looked at it thought the 3d looked great but then as i left realised i had a headache that i didn't have before, but i just assumed i was being stupid until earlier this week i saw one in Argos and started to demo a game and before i'd even got through the title sequence i felt sick.

That does seem to be a common problem but the games look just as great without the 3d. Personally I end up playing more with the 3d off except for during cut-scenes and while watching the nintendo video app. As for the ambassador program, the start date has been announced as September 1 for the virtual console games with the gameboy advance games being available by the end of the year.

I think 3d is a temporary hype that will soon go away, thus putting too much effort there is ridiculous

I always seem to have trouble watching netflix on the 3ds. The shows i've tried to watch kept stopping to reload, took over an hour for me to watch an episode of The Power Rangers and when I tried to watch Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the video played fine but had terrible audio problems.

I dont fancy watching videos on a tiny screen if im gonna spend time watching something i'd rather use my laptop or TV.

I think they need to increase the're game catalogue to encourage more people to buy the console. One of the biggest selling points of the DS was the amount of games.
